Ms. Alison Church

Welcome to first grade! I'm so excited for this year and to have your child in my class! I can't wait for the new year to start! Let me begin by introducing myself.

I was born and raised in Carterville. I am a 1997 graduate of Carterville High School and received my Bachelor's of Science degree from Southern Illinois University. After graduating from SIU, I moved to Knoxville, TN, where I completed my teaching certification at Maryville College. I lived in Tennessee for 7 years before moving back home in 2011. While in TN, I taught pre k and was a substitute for grades K-5. I also had my two children while in TN and was able to stay home with both of them for a couple of years. Jackson, 10, is going to into the 5th grade and Harper Rose, 6, will be in 1st grade. They bring tremendous joy to my life and keep me grounded!

After moving back to Illinois, I got a job as a second grade teacher at Skyline Academy in Marion. I worked there for 1 year before getting hired at Herrin Elementary as a reading specialist for 3 years. Reading is my passion and I loved every minute of it! Helping kids learn to read and seeing their faces light up when it clicks is one of my most favorite things in the world! I then moved to teach third grade at OLMC for the last two years. And that brings me to here! I'm so excited to be a part of the Tornado family and look forward to getting to know the kids and the families!

In my spare time, I enjoy running. I completed 3 half marathons last year. I run for St. Jude's Children and love that I can give back to such a worthy cause while doing something that keeps me healthy and sane. I love to travel and if I can't get away for a big trip, I enjoy finding new places to explore around Southern Illinois or within a day's driving distance.  As I mentioned earlier, I love reading. I'm currently into thrillers right now, but love most genres. My other interests include concerts and broadway musicals. I love all types of music and just enjoy listening and dancing!  I'm still currently addicted to Hamilton and know the soundtrack by heart. I was able to see it at The Fox in the spring and it was more than amazing! In the summer, you will find me on the lake or by a pool.  Outside on the water with the sunshine on my face is my true happy place! I can't live without coffee, it gives me life.

I love teaching and watching the children grow from the beginning of the year to the end, is one of my greatest pleasures! I ensure you I will do everything I can to make this a successful year for every student. With your help and participation, I know we are going to have a fantastic year!
